Think about all of the mechanical twisting, stretching, and moving that takes place through the timing chain, gears, and camshaft before the ignition is fired by the distributor. Anything in that chain can alter ignition timing or even generate a misfire, especially in high horsepower/high compression engines.

Flying Magnet Crank Trigger
MSD introduced the external crank trigger kit with its Flying Magnet design. The system uses four magnets embedded in an aluminum wheel to trigger a stationary, non-magnetic pickup. This design eliminates the possibility of false triggers—the pickup can only be triggered by the magnets as they pass the pickup. MSD uses powerful rare earth magnets to create a strong signal, allowing the engine to start easily even at low cranking speeds.
The Flying Magnet Crank Trigger plugs directly into the magnetic pickup connector of an MSD ignition box. Each kit includes a CNC-machined trigger wheel and brackets, pickup, and mounting hardware. Kits are available for small and big block Chevy, small and big block Ford, small and big block Mopar, and Pontiac V8.
Pro-Billet Crank Trigger Distributors
MSD’s Pro-Billet Crank Trigger Distributors eliminate the advance assembly and pickup—the distributor essentially acts as spark pipeline to the plugs. Since these distributors are used primarily in racing applications, MSD gave them an oversized steel shaft with a QPQ coating to reduce friction. The shaft is guided by a sealed ball-bearing assembly at the top and an extra-long sintered bushing at the bottom for smooth operation. For high rpm stability, the housings are CNC-machined from solid billet 6061-T6 aluminum that is machined to within 0.001 in. for absolute accuracy.
Other features include a large diameter cap with wide spaced terminals, an injection-molded Rynite rotor with thick vanes to stir up the air inside the cap, and a high dielectric Rynite base to prevent arcing to the billet housing.
MSD Pro-Billet Crank Trigger Distributors are available with a crab style distributor cap to clear tunnel rams and superchargers, or with slip collars for modified blocks, heads, and intakes. Distributors are small and big block Chevy, small and big block Ford, and Ford 351C.
