AMP EFI/DIYAutoTune.com introduces a new plug-and-play ignition upgrade for small cars producing big power. The first MaxSpark drop-in kits are available for Mazda Miatas—a model the company knows plenty about as a leader in Miata aftermarket engine management for nearly 20 years.
“I think we own just about every version of the Miata there is, so this is a great place to start for our new PNP drop-in kits,” says Ben Berusch, Manager, Engineering & Support for AMP EFI/DIYAutoTune.com. “The MaxSpark uses the IGN-1A SMART race coil, which is the biggest and baddest coil out there—and typically lasts for years of racing!”
The high-output IGN-1A delivers a significant ignition upgrade, with maximum voltage output of 81,000V. Output energy is 103 mJ and maximum current is 19 amps. This new kit may improve vehicle reliability by moving ignition system high current demands away from the failure-prone Main Relay and onto a new, dedicated relay.
Available for 1990-2005 Miata models, the MaxSpark ignition kits include a plug-and-play harness with TXL high-temp automotive-grade wire and multipoint grounding. The wire is color-coded and printed, with labeled heat shrink for connector identification.
The secondary harness is year range-specific for true plug-and-play installation. The sequential adapter harness makes it easy to run sequential ignition.
An exciting feature of the MaxSpark kits is that they are compatible with stock ECUs, as well as with aftermarket offerings from AMP EFI/DIYAutoTune.com and others.
“There are some features, such as dwell control and the ability to convert to sequential coil-per-plug ignition, that require a standalone ECU for maximum performance, but you can get many of the benefits of a hotter ignition system while still running the stock ECU, too,” explains Berusch. “These coils work with any modern standalone ECU, and can be used in stock wasted spark mode, or sequential coil-per-plug.”
Other MaxSpark features include:
• Techflex Wire Sleeves that resist damage from heat, chemicals, UV and abrasion
• 50-Amp Fuse that provides protection for the harness and coils
• Dedicated Power Relay that minimizes voltage drop to ignition coils
• Mounting Hardware that makes installation simple
• High-Quality Spark Plug Wires that can handle the increased spark
The turnkey ignition upgrades are made in the USA and require no cutting or splicing, no extra parts and no need to cut sheet metal or drill holes.
