Canadians fare well in the inaugural Canada-versus-US challenge
BUDDS CREEK, Maryland (September 22, 2013) – Rocky Di Lecce is one happy man. The 2013 Pro Modified Racing Association Champion had a fitting end to his season, winning the first International Pro Mod Challenge held at Maryland International Raceway this weekend.
The weekend race, part of MIR’s 28th Annual Snap-on Tools Superchargers Showdown and featuring the PMRA against the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association, brought some of the best teams in Pro Mod to the Maryland track to do battle in a Canada-versus-USA challenge.
So when the rounds were finished and the dust had settled, Di Lecce, of Mississauga, Ontario, flew the Maple Leaf proudly as the victor of this prestigious event.
And Di Lecce met up with one of his prime PMRA opponents in the final round, three-time champion Bruce Boland of Stoney Creek, Ontario, making the race an all-Canadian final after eliminating a strong US team of Pro Modifieds.
Boland, who qualified 13th in the field with his B&B Racing 1968 Firebird, gave Di Lecce a run for his money in the final, posting a 6.005, 239.74, but it wasn’t quite enough for Di Lecce’s 5.946, 245.90 with his Metro Infrastructure 1968 Camaro.
Di Lecce qualified ninth for the race, which was paced by Tim O’Hare of Ocean View, Delaware, who qualified number one with a 5.904, 244.29 in his 1968 Camaro. O’Hare was taken out in the first round by long-time PMRA competitor Jack Grainy of Basom, New York, who himself fell victim in the second round.
Top Canadian qualifier was 2012 PMRA champion, Eric Latino of Whitby, Ontario, who qualified his Team Green 1969 Camaro in number six spot with a 5.997, 243.50, but was out in the first round of eliminations.
Di Lecce took out Dean Marinis of Whitestone, New York, Kevin McCurdy of Hamburg, Pennsylvania, and David Hance of Inwood, New York to run in the final. Meanwhile Boland bested Tommy Gray of Baltimore, Maryland, Gerry Capano of Greenville, Delaware, and Jeff Miller of Strasburg, Virginia, to meet up with Di Lecce.
The International Pro Mod Challenge was the eighth and final PMRA race of 2013. This was a non-points race for the series, which was won this year by Di Lecce, with Grainy second in points and Boland third, to finish off the ninth season of this popular Pro Modified series.
