Holley Performance Products is proud to announce the all-aluminum 600-cfm 0-1850SA and 0-80457SA carburetors.

These popular carburetors have been revamped with an aluminum main body, bowls, throttle body, and metering block. That means a 40% weight savings and a polished finish that stays shiny longer, all with a price tag that fits any budget. These bolt-on-and-go performance carburetors are available with manual or electric choke (0-1850SA and 0-80457SA respectively). Both feature a single push-on style fuel inlet, multiple vacuum ports for accessories, and Ford A/T kickdown. 700R4 linkage and 4L60/80E TPS kits are available separately.

The 0-1850 and 0-80457 carburetors have been staples in the hot rod and muscle car world because they run great on a wide variety of applications thanks to their universal calibration and vacuum secondaries. With the well-mannered characteristics of 600-cfm airflow, adjustable needle and seats, and a choke, these carburetors are right at home on most stock to mildly modified street machines.

By Robert Weathers, Photos by manufacturer

NX LIGHTNING 250 SOLENOID

Mike, “The Mad Scientist” Wood, owner of Nitrous Express (NX), never seems to rest on his past accomplishments. Working with his team of Nitrous Nijas, he emerged from his secret lab hidden beneath the “Lost Falls” of Wichita Falls, Texas, with a nitrous solenoid so radical it defies boundaries set by industry standards.

Previously, racers that needed to pack a big punch with a single solenoid had to use the infamous heavyweight “Trashcan” solenoid, but that was yesterday. Today is a new day and the NX Lightning 250 is an all-new lightweight solenoid, with super-heavyweight power, designed to rock the nitrous world by flowing 2 ½ times the nitrous, with 1/3 the amp draw. Simply put, it trashes the trashcan with a knockout punch that’s capable of delivering nearly 600 RWHP (rear-wheel horsepower) through an unmodified stainless braided D-4 supply line, and 1200 RWHP with an unrestricted single spray-bar plate.

What does all this mean for the average racer, not much, but to racers living on the edge, who thrive on the mantra of, “Too much is not enough,” the NX Lightning 250 is just right.

FAST FACTS

Aluminum body weighs over one pound less than traditional “Trashcan” solenoid

6 amp @ 12 volt maximum current draw, 1/3 the amp draw of the “Trashcan” solenoid

Capable of flowing over 2.5 time the capability of the “Trashcan” solenoid

Great for restricted nitrous classes, allows a single, unmodified Stainless braided D-4 supply line to deliver almost 600 RWHP

Will allow a plate with a single set of spray bars to generate 1200+RWHP

Well you’re about to find out May 18th-20th at Grand Bend Motorplex during RPM/Lucas Oil Extreme Event #1 Presented in Association with Mickey Thompson.

“Will he walk it, or just talk it?”

“Look, this guy has never even been exposed to drag racing before… EVER! Think about it, he’ll be blown away!” exclaims RPM Editor In Chief Chris Biro. “This Extreme Event just happens to have NDRA 5 second Funny Cars, the HURA Pro Doorslammer 6 second door cars, the Can/Am Stock Super Stock group, an Insane Jet Car and a whole bunch more!”

“As for Kevin, we’ve got some hard work planned for him over a short period of time, he’ll definitely need to be on his game. PLUS, RPM Editor Chris Biro, a Drag Racer himself, will join in on the action. “It’s been at least 5 years since I have been behind the wheel racing,” Biro states. “My duties with RPM have simply not provided the time for me to do what I love, and it’s sad when you consider that is what got me into this business in the first place. I am really looking forward to this opportunity. Am I rusty? You bet! Will I kick Kevin’s butt? You can count on it!”

3.

5. Top It All Off With… – What better way to top off a weekend Drag Racing than with an incredible meal! Chef, Culinary Arts Teacher and also former Champion Outlaw Drag Racer, Tim Biro, will create one of his famous meals that reflects the aura of the surroundings and how, even off the track, racers compete, but this time it is to out perform one another on the grill! New to Kevin will be what Drag Racing calls “Bench Racing” as we share horsepower stories of past and present in The Motorhead Traveler pits over a great meal.

“Any time we can get any type of media attention to fast cars and especially Drag Racing it is a huge kick in the pants for the entire industry. Drag Racing as a whole is one of the highest power most on-the-edge motorsports in the world, yet remains one of the more unnoticed among the mainstream public, aside from Top Fuel of course. At RPM Magazine, everything we do is about changing that!” Biro added.

Editor’s Rant – May Issue 2012

EVOLUTION

Never being the ones to sit still and wait, copy the moves of others, or just go on and on in the same way without shaking things up once in a while, RPM Magazine has again reached a new level within the Performance, Race and Motorsports Magazine industry.

Notice anything this issue? Check out the cover… WILD! How about the nice thick paper inside the mag… VERY COOL! And then there’s the content… well that is nothing short of AWESOME!

RPM is about quality! Quality of content, design, and even the physical aspects of the magazine itself. We don’t blow smoke! We innovate, NOT imitate! We set the trends, not follow them. In other words, instead of listening to what their readers want, many magazines look for ways to follow the pack, (usually to save money or to “wow” you with the dazzle of their “Photoshop” capabilities and in turn sacrifice originality, readability, flow etc). How about using near-phone-book-quality thin paper to save a buck, copying stories already published on the internet 10 times over, or bringing you a time sensitive story 3 to 5 months after it has taken place (can you say “ancient”). Most magazines these days give you so many consecutive ads in their magazine that you think you are reading a catalogue rather than a car mag (I think the record we’ve seen is 18 pages before an actual story). Or publish mostly articles that revolve around the “big buck”, “big name” or “big opportunity” stories rather than stories about the people and machines who make this sport great… the grassroots! What about publishing facing pages with only advertisements on them, instead of making sure that every ad is placed with editorial content of some kind? I feel this is a disservice to advertisers. Having words on pages with or adjacent to an advertisement helps readers see the ad in two ways, conscious and subconscious, which can only be good for the advertisers who help support the magazines.

Our goal of 13 years ago, “to make a magazine for the readers” still holds true today. One where you might just be reading about yourself or your neighbor as opposed to the same people over and over again. Through the evolution of RPM you have seen many changes, and all made with you in mind. We hope you enjoy this new look and feel, and our continuing commitment to you, our readers, to bring you the baddest street and race cars in all the land… and who knows, next month it might be yours!

Now read in 29 countries, RPM can be found on large newsstands in the USA and Canada, and select newsstands in the United Kingdom. You can also read RPM at your local Performance or Speed Shop (if they don’t get it you need to tell them to!). RPM is also distributed at many events each year, and you can even read complete issues online (but not until 30 days after their newsstand release), so the very best way to get your fix of original horsepower is to simply subscribe at: www.rpm-mag.com

Our continuing goal is simple, bring back the heyday of the printed car mag and give you the magazine that you want! You know, the one that you can’t wait to see show up on your doorstep each and every month! Just as I wrote here over 13 years ago, “save the fluff, the window dressing, politics, self serving articles and all that other useless junk for the other mags”. At RPM, we’ll bring you the good stuff, the grassroots, the horsepower, the excitement that first attracted each and every one of us to fast cars in the first place!

Chris Biro, Editor In Chief, RPM MAGAZINE http://www.rpm-mag.com

SERIOUSLY! – Seriously Insane, Seriously Wild and Seriously Fast, are the best words to even start to describe Brian Hicks’ 3,000 horsepower twin trubo HEMI Outlaw 10.5 Challenger, affectionately (and appropriately) nicknamed “DECON”…you know, the “Rat” poison!

TWIN TURBO II – Mike Steffan’s very cool twin turbo Chevy II is at home on the streets, at the track, or even on display in the main hall at a National car show, which is where we first saw this amazing street machine. This is one of those projects that was built to be fast, reliable and enjoyable wherever it may end up on the weekend.
THE LEGEND LIVES ON – Drag Racing legend Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins crossed his final finish line on March 29, 2012 at age 81.
OLYELLR – What do gear-head drag racers do when there is 3 feet of snow on the tracks in Atlantic Canada? They tear a perfectly good 2010 Camaro to pieces and create a true modern day muscle car.
